Incorrect Quotes Tips — How to Write and Post Them Well

Updated

Anyone can generate an incorrect quote. Making one that gets reblogged with "THIS IS SO THEM" takes a little more thought. These tips come from looking at what makes the format land — from casting and pronouns to editing, image sizes and posting etiquette. They work whether you write from scratch or start with the incorrect quotes generator.

1. Cast for contrast

The engine of almost every incorrect quote is a mismatch between characters. Before you generate anything, decide who plays which role:

  • The instigator has the idea and no brakes.
  • The enabler thinks the idea is great, actually.
  • The voice of reason is outnumbered and very tired.
  • The wildcard says one line that derails everything.

In most templates, Character A opens the scene and drives it, so put your instigator in the first slot. If a quote feels flat, try swapping two names and generating again — the same lines often get funnier when the "wrong" person says them.

2. Match the cast size to the dynamic

Two characters are perfect for ships, rivals and siblings. Three gives you the classic schemer–enabler–sensible trio. Four or more is ideal for adventuring parties and sitcom-style friend groups. Do not force a six-person scene onto a pair; pick the cast size that matches the joke. Our library is organized that way, with dedicated pools for two, three and four characters.

3. Get the pronouns right

Nothing breaks the illusion faster than a character being referred to with the wrong pronoun. Set she/her, he/him or they/them for each character before generating, or enter custom pronouns in the form xe/xem/xyr/xyrs/xemself. The generator fills every reference automatically, including capitalisation at the start of a sentence.

4. Use vibes to steer, not to restrict

Vibe filters — Chaotic, Sarcastic, Wholesome, Romantic and Fantasy — are useful for narrowing the pool, but do not over-filter. Turning on two or three vibes gives you variety while keeping the tone close. A romantic ship can still have a chaotic moment; a found family can still roast each other.

5. Edit the template

A generated quote is a draft. The best posts usually involve a small tweak:

  • Swap a generic noun for a canon one. "The car" becomes "the TARDIS"; "a sword" becomes a specific named blade.
  • Add a callback. Reference a running joke from the source material.
  • Trim. If the last line is weaker than the second-to-last, cut it. Ending on the strongest line matters more than including every line.
  • Keep stage directions short. [long pause] is funnier than a sentence describing the pause.

Copy the plain text into your notes app, edit it, then paste it into the Studio's text card if you want an image of your edited version.

6. Choose the right format for the platform

Where you post decides what you should export:

PlatformBest format
Tumblr, AO3 notes, RedditPlain text, or a Portrait 4:5 image
Instagram feedSquare 1:1 or Portrait 4:5
Instagram / TikTok StoriesStory 9:16
DiscordWide 16:9 or Link 1200×630, or the Discord chat style
X / BlueskyLink 1200×630 or Square

If you post the same quote in several places, export a ZIP with all five sizes in one click instead of resizing each version by hand.

7. Make the image readable

  • Contrast first. Light text on a busy background is unreadable on a phone. Use a solid theme or turn on the white card.
  • Let auto-fit work. It shrinks long scenes to fit; if the text gets too small, switch to Portrait or Story.
  • Pick a font that matches the tone. Serif for drama, handwritten for soft moments, mono for chaotic group-chat energy.
  • Keep or drop the watermark. It is on by default to credit the tool, and you can turn it off. Either choice is fine.

8. Write your own from scratch

Once you have made a few, try writing an original. A reliable recipe:

  1. Start with a normal sentence one character might say.
  2. Have the second character respond in the most "them" way possible.
  3. Escalate once.
  4. End on a short line or an italic stage direction.

For example:

Character A: I'm going to be mature about this. Character B: You're holding a water balloon. Character A: Maturely.

9. Post with good tags

Tag the fandom, the characters and, for ships, the pairing. Add "incorrect quotes" so people browsing the format can find you. If the quote references a recent episode or chapter, add a spoiler tag and a line break before the image.

10. Be kind

Incorrect quotes are a love language. Avoid templates that mock real-world groups, do not put real people into quotes without consent, and credit fan artists if you use their work. Every template on this site has already been screened for slurs, explicit content and graphic violence, but your edits are your responsibility.

Quick checklist

  • Cast chosen for contrast, instigator in slot A
  • Pronouns set for every character
  • Two or three vibes on
  • Template edited with at least one canon detail
  • Size picked for the platform
  • Tags and spoiler warnings added
